Recurrent hemoperitoneum in chronic peritoneal dialysis in children
Introduction: Bleeding into the peritoneal cavity (hemoperitoneum) is one of the complications of chronic peritoneal dialysis (PD). Its occurrence varies from 6.1 to 8.4% of patients receiving this treatment. This complication always causes lot of anxiety, but is usually benign. On the other hand it might be also a sign of a serious pathology. Materials and methods: The analysis of records of PD patients with at least one incident of intraperitoneal bleeding, treated in the Department of Pediatric Nephrology Wrocław Medical University between 2001 and 2007 year, was performed. We analysed such the parameters like: sex, cause of the disease, age of the PD beginning, the first hemoperitoneum incident, its cause, frequency and intensity. The patient’s prognoses were also analysed. Results: In analysed time, PD was performed in 44 patients (21 girls, 23 boys) aged from 10 days to 21 years, mean 10.5 years. In our population of children on PD, hemoperitoneum occurred in 9.3% of patients. All of those cases were girls and all incidents were associated with menstruation. Conclusion: Recurrent intraperitoneal bleeding is benign in most cases. This type of bleeding is not associated with frequency of peritonitis, course of PD, does not impair filtration ability of the peritoneal membrane or influence survival of renal replacement therapy method or patients survival.
